Efficacy and Safety of Combining Retinal Laser Photocoagulation with Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Therapy for the Treatment of Macular Edema Due to Retinal Vein Occlusion

Abstract

Objective This study evaluates the effectiveness and safety of retinal laser photocoagulation combined with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(anti-VEGF)therapy in treating macular edema resulting from retinal vein occlu-sion.Methods Ninety-seven patients with retinal vein occlusion and macular edema were treated at Rugao People's Hos-pital from February 2021 to February 2024.They were divided into two groups:the control group(48 patients)received only retinal laser photocoagulation,while the experimental group(49 patients)underwent retinal laser photocoagulation followed by 12 months of anti-VEGF therapy.The study compared the improvement and resolution times of symptoms,best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)scores,macular foveal thickness,macular edema volume,subfoveal choroidal thickness(SFCT),and complication rates between the groups.Results The experimental group demonstrated significantly shorter times for symp-tom resolution and greater improvements in macular edema compared to the control group(P<0.05).BCVA scores were notably higher in the experimental group at 3,6,and 12 months(P<0.05).The interaction effects between groups and time were both statistically significant(P<0.05).The reduction in macular foveal thickness was also more significant in the experimental group,indicating more effective control of macular edema and retinal structural recovery(P<0.05).The decreases in macular ede-ma volume and SFCT were also significantly greater in the experimental group compared to the control group(P<0.05).There was no significant difference between the two groups in the incidence of complications such as increased intraocular pressure,retinal detachment,iris rubeosis,and endophthalmitis(P>0.05).Conclusion Combining retinal laser pho-tocoagulation with anti-VEGF therapy is more effective and safe in enhancing vision and reducing macular ede-ma in patients with retinal vein occlusion.
