Abstract

To investigate the effects of ferrihydrite on arsenic accumulation in vegetables including Chinese cabbage,carrot,celery,and chili,we applied synthesized ferrihydrite to arsenic-contaminated soil for pot experiments.The results showed that the percentage of available arsenic in soil decreased with the increase in the dose of ferrihydrite regardless of whether vegetables were planted or not.Compared with the group without ferrihydrite application,the application of ferrihydrite resulted in decreases of 72.41%,63.72%,and 92.74%in arsenic content in the edible parts of carrot,celery,and chili,respectively.Moreover,the changes in As(Ⅲ)and As(Ⅴ)content in these three vegetables were consistent with that in As content.The application of ferrihydrite did not significantly affect the arsenic content in Chinese cabbage.The optimal doses of ferrihydrite applied to carrot,celery,and chili were 0.5%,0.5%,and 1%,respectively,for limiting arsenic accumulation.Therefore,ferrihydrite can be supplemented to limit the accumulation of arsenic in edible parts of vegetables in arsenic-contaminated areas.
