Abstract

Bacterial cellulose(BC)/thermoplastic starch(TPS)composite films have great application potential,but their elongation at break needs to be improved.In this study,the effects of CaCl2 addition on the properties of BC/TPS composite films were investigated by adding different concentrations(0%-10%)of CaCl2 to prepare various BC/TPS composite films.The mechanical properties,water content,intermolecular interaction,crystallinity,thermal stability,water vapor transmittance and oxygen transmittance of BC/TPS films with CaCl2 addition were studied.The results showed that 0.5%CaCl2 could increase the elongation at break by one fold while maintaining the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composite film.CaCl2 could have coordination effect with hydroxyl group in the system,which might replace partial hydrogen bond interaction,so as to improve the elongation at break of BC/TPS composite films,and affect the crystallinity,thermal stability and barrier properties.Moreover,the addition of CaCl2 also enhanced the freshness preservation of the composite film on strawberry.
