Abstract

The aim of this study was to construct oxidative stress model animals by attacking specific pathogen free(SPF)white Leghorn chickens,and then evaluate the effects of Baitouweng oral liquid(BTW)on the immune and antioxidant capacity of broilers in poultry production.Thirty 21-day-old SPF male white Leghorn chickens were randomly assigned to 3 groups:control group(CON group),lipopolysaccharide(LPS)group(LPS group)and BTW+LPS group(B-L group)with 10 replicates per group and 1 chicken per replicate.In CON group,2 mL normal saline was injected intraperitoneally at 31,33 and 35 days of age.The LPS groups were intraperitoneally injected with LPS(0.5 mg/kg of BW)at 31,33 and 35 days of age.Chickens in the B-L group were given 4 mL BTW per day at 21 to 35 days of age,and LPS(0.5 mg/kg of BW)was intraper-itoneally injected at 31,33 and 35 days of age.The experiment lasted for 14 days.The results showed that compared with CON group,LPS group showed obvious diarrhea symptoms,serum reactive oxygen species(ROS)and malondialdehyde(MDA)contents were significantly increased(P<0.05),and total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC)was significantly decreased(P<0.05),indicating that the oxidative stress model of SPF chickens induced by LPS was successfully established.Immune index results showed that compared with LPS group,BTW intake significantly increased blood hemoglobin(HGB)level and red blood cell count(RBC)of model chickens(P<0.05).The contents of tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),interleukin-1β(IL-1β)and interleukin-6(IL-6)in serum of model chickens were significantly decreased(P<0.05).The contents of inter-leukin-4(IL-4)and interleukin-10(IL-10)in serum were significantly increased(P<0.05),and were main-tained at similar levels to those in CON group(P>0.05).The results of antioxidant indexes showed that com-pared with LPS group,the activities of glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px),catalase(CAT)and superoxide dismutase(SOD)in serum of model chickens were significantly increased by BTW intake(P<0.05).At the same time,BTW also maintained the normal morphology of ileum mucosa,liver and immune organ index of model chickens.In summary,this study confirms that BTW can improve the immune and antioxidant capacity of model chickens by regulating the contents of inflammatory cytokines and the activities of antioxidant en-zymes in poultry,as well as affecting the development of tissues and organs,so as to alleviate intestinal inflam-mation and oxidative stress of model chickens.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2025,37(3):1771-1783]
