Investigate Role of Macrophage Polarization in Radiation Lung Injury Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine Theory of"Balancing Yin and Yang"

Abstract
Radiation-induced lung injury(RILI)is a common complication observed in patients with thoracic tumors following radio-therapy,manifesting as either early-stage radiation pneumonitis or late-stage radiation fibrosis.Macrophage polarization refers to the im-mune response process in which macrophages are polarized into M1 type and M2 type after receiving microenvironment stimulation.These two types exhibit antagonistic and transformative characteristics at different stages of RILI,akin to the mutual restriction,trans-formation,and Balancing of Yin and Yang in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).This paper aims to explore the role of macrophage polarization in RILI,grounded in the Yin-Yang theory of TCM.During the phase of radiation pneumonitis,an excessive effect of M1 macrophages necessitates treatment aimed at clearing Lung and detoxifying,along with nourishing Yin and enriching Blood.In the phase of radiation fibrosis,where the effect of M2 macrophages is overly pronounced,treatment should focus on warming and supple-menting Yang Qi,as well as invigorating Blood and dissolving stasis.According to the theory of"Balancing Yin and Yang"in TCM,keeping the polarization level of macrophages in dynamic balance may be a new target and a new direction for the treatment of radiation lung injury.关键词
