Ecophobia and the Ecological Other:A Reflection on Exclusionary Discourse

Abstract
"Ecophobia"and"the ecological other"are typical concepts in the field of ecocriticism to study exclusionary discourse.The former refers to the Western disdain for and fear of nature,suggesting that"ecophobia"is an unfounded and irrational fear of the natural environment,which serves as a psychological root cause of environmental degradation and ecological crises.It starts from the perspective of the individualized subject,exploring the cognitive and psychological roots of humanity's oppression and control over nature.It emphasizes that the essence of human fear toward nature is an ecological pathology.The latter draws on disability theory and postcolonial perspectives to examine inequalities in the development of environmental movements and ecocriticism,with the aim of exposing the struggle for power and the ecological exploitation of indigenous peoples carried out in the name of"ecology".Both concepts confront the ecological binary oppositions that have been downplayed in the development of ecocriticism.These include symbolic contrasts within the ecological and non-ecological framework,such as nature versus non-nature,purity versus pollution,and health versus disease,along with their associated cultural connotations.At the same time,the two concepts focus on different aspects,providing a theoretical foundation for the study of exclusionary discourse in ecocriticism from perspectives such as essentialism and cultural construction.关键词
