Effects of different soils nutrients on the competitive relationship between male and female Populus cathayana

Abstract
This study aims to investigate changes in intra-sexual competition relationships and their physi-ological effects on female and male Populus cathayana under different soil nutrient conditions,thereby reveal-ing sex-specific physiological responses in resource competition.It was hypothesized that male P.cathayana would demonstrate competitive advantages under low-nutrient conditions,while females would exhibit supe-rior performance in high-nutrient environments.The experiment utilized soils from Hebei(low-nutrient)and Liaoning(high-nutrient)provinces in China,establishing high-nutrient and low-nutrient treatment groups.Photosynthetic parameters and other indicators were measured to analyze competitive performance and physi-ological responses.Results demonstrated that under low-nutrient conditions,male individuals exhibited sig-nificantly higher stem biomass,net photosynthetic rate,stomatal conductance,and transpiration rate com-pared to females,indicating enhanced competitive capacity through improved photosynthetic efficiency during resource scarcity.The intra-sexual competition intensity between sexes showed similarity under low-nutrient conditions,but nutrient enrichment significantly intensified competition pressure on female individuals from same-sex neighbors,with intra-sexual competition intensity of females surpassing that of males.Males dis-played significantly higher nitrate nitrogen content in roots and leaves under nutrient deficiency,suggesting su-perior nitrogen absorption and utilization efficiency to sustain growth during resource limitation.These find-ings provide novel perspectives for understanding ecological adaptation strategies in dioecious plants under varying environmental conditions.关键词
