The Embodied Design Logic of Public Art in the Digital Intelligence Era

Abstract

The integration of digital-intelligent technologies is driving a paradigm shift in public art from static material forms to dynamic interactive systems.Traditional research,constrained by Cartesian dualism,overemphasizes visual symbols while neglecting the body's foundational role as a medium for artistic experience.This study employs an interdisciplinary framework combining phenomenology,cognitive science,and the philosophy of technology to elucidate the Embodied Turn in public art during the digital-intelligent era and its design logic,proposing"embodied design"as a core paradigm for reconfiguring the relationship between public art creation and experience. Firstly,the study traces the theoretical origins of Embodied Design.From a phenomenological perspective,Merleau-Ponty's"body-subject"theory posits the body as a field of meaning generation,revealing its interwoven relationship with the world.Cognitive science's"4E framework"(embodied,embedded,extended,enacted cognition)breaks through traditional"disembodied cognition",emphasizing that cognition emerges from the dynamic interaction between the body and the environment.Technical philosophy,particularly Don Ihde's mediation theory,reveals how technology reshapes subjectivity through bodily experience,promoting a shift in design from instrumental to symbiotic.Based on these foundations,embodied design is defined as a design philosophy and methodology centered on the body,emphasizing the interwoven relationship between objects and the body,and focusing on how to support perception-movement patterns and experience generation. Secondly,the study analyzes the embodied turn in public art during the digital-intelligent era.Digital-intelligent technologies reconstruct body perception and spatial experience through multimodal interaction and mixed reality technologies,shifting public art from a"broadcast"model to a"dialogue"model.Through dynamic perception-action loops,meaning emerges interactively,exhibiting characteristics of immediacy,multimodality,adaptability,and distributed cognition.The ontological shift in technology drives public art from static presentation to dynamic interaction and from physical limitations to mixed reality. Next,the study proposes a threefold design strategy system:"the body as interface""the field as body"and"technology as embodiment".(1)The body as interface:By reconstructing multi-scale perception,integrating multi-sensory modalities,and practicing generative art,the body shifts from a passive receiver to an active constructor,achieving a paradigm shift from"perceptible"to"experiential".(2)The field as body:By constructing mixed fields,translating social and cultural contexts,and employing embodied interactive narratives,the field becomes an"extended body"bearing social cognition and promoting the generation and evolution of collective meaning.(3)Technology as embodiment:Technology evolves from an external tool to an integral part of embodied experience,reconfiguring"body-technology-environment"symbiosis and shaping a dynamic,processual mode of existence. Finally,the study philosophically reflects on the internal contradictions and ethical challenges within embodied design.Bodily subjectivity exhibits fluid and distributed characteristics in digital art,necessitating a reflective mechanism to avoid technological determinism and anthropocentrism.Technology application requires balancing transparency and resistance to safeguard the diversity and autonomy of human experience.Public art shifts from object ontology to relational ontology,emphasizing dynamic networks constituted through bodily participation.The deep integration of digital technologies raises issues of privacy,data sovereignty,and technological surveillance,requiring embodied design to balance technological innovation with humanistic care. In summary,through an interdisciplinary theoretical framework and practical strategies,this study systematically parses the embodied design logic of public art in the digital-intelligent era,promoting an ontological shift in public art from a static material carrier to a dynamic experiential event.Embodied design not only reconfigures artistic creation and experience but also provides a philosophical framework for understanding human-machine symbiosis in digital environments.Future research will further deepen the cultural adaptability of embodied design,explore integration paths of AI,biological data,and the environment,and expand ethical boundaries in posthuman contexts,driving public art toward a new stage of ontological exploration and technological-humanistic resonance.
