Abstract

The study aimed to evaluate the effects of UV-A and UV-B radiation on the physiological characteristics of Potamogeton crispus under high-intensity exposure.Plants at the logarithmic growth stage were exposed to four different light treatments:photosynthetically active radiation(PAR)only,PAR supplemented with UV-A radiation,PAR supplemented with UV-B radiation,and PAR with a combination of UV-A and UV-B radiation.Each treatment was applied for 8 hours per day over 28 days.The study assessed the effects of ultraviolet radiation on leaf chlorophyll content,activities of peroxidase(POD),superoxide dismutase(SOD),and the content of malondialdehyde(MDA).Additionally,the coefficient of variation and the phenotypic plasticity index for these parameters were calculated.These results indicated that UV-B irradiation significantly reduced the leaf chlorophyll levels,while UV-A exhibited a temporary enhancing effect that was not sustained over the long term.In conditions of combined UV-A and UV-B treatment,as well as UV-B treatment alone,there was a significant increase in POD,SOD activities,and MDA content compared to the control group.In contrast,UV-A treatment alone resulted in a moderate increase in these parameters.UV-B irradiation also increased the coefficient of variation and the phenotypic plasticity index.The research highlights the significant negative impact of UV-B on the growth of P.crispus.Long-term exposure to UV-A has a minor inhibitory effect on the species'development,which is considerably less severe than the damage caused by UV-B.Regression analysis showed no significant synergistic or mitigating impacts from the combined exposure to UV-A and UV-B.This study provides valuable insights into the physiological responses of P.crispus to intense solar radiation,particularly during the transition from late spring to early summer,thereby laying a theoretical foundation for further research on plant adaptation to environmental stressors.
