Abstract
The Xinjie Christian Church,known as'The First Protestant Church of China',is a signif-icant modern Christian heritage building that has witnessed the urbanisation process of Xiamen,Fujian Province.This article explores the origins and evolution of Xinjie Christian Church's Neoclas-sical architectural style through a systematic anal-ysis of relevant archival materials.By comparing the two versions of Xinjie Christian Church before and after reconstruction,it discusses the reasons for the continuation of style,the changes in interior layout driven by historical and social factors,and the influence of Xinjie Christian Church on other churches in southern Fujian Province.The article also focuses on the interaction between the church and urban development,analysing its relationship with the surrounding buildings,roads,and streets blocks in different historical periods.It explains how the church gradually integrated and coexisted in a balanced manner with the surrounding commercial district after experiencing initial conflicts.Finally,the article emphasises the importance of respecting and understanding religious beliefs in the process of architectural heritage conservation and historical and cultural transmission.关键词
