Abstract

To study the axial compressive behavior of aluminum alloy tube confined reinforced concrete columns,axial compression tests were conducted on 18 short columns with square and circular cross-sections.The test program included 12 aluminum alloy tube confined reinforced concrete columns,two concrete-filled aluminum alloy tube columns and four aluminum alloy tube confined concrete columns as comparison specimens.The results indicate that during the failure process,the aluminum alloy tube and the core concrete of the circular cross-sectional columns exhibit shear failure mode,while the square cross-sectional specimens demonstrate buckling and tearing at the corners of the aluminum alloy tubes.For specimens with the same cross-sectional dimension,as the thickness of the aluminum alloy tube increases from 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm,the axial compression capacity is increased by 1.5%to 6.5%,and the energy dissipation is increased by 23.8%to 167.7%.Circular cross-sectional columns exhibit better ductility and higher compressive capacity than those of the square cross-sectional columns.Additionally,the transverse confinement effect on the core concrete was studied and compared considering different cross sections.It is found that the circular cross-sectional columns exert an earlier and more effective confinement on the core concrete than the square cross-sectional columns at the initial and late stage of loading.The equivalent confining stress for both types of cross-sectional specimens was calculated.The calculated results show good agreement with the test results.Meanwhile,detailing measures were suggested to improve the effect of the corner tearing of square aluminum alloy tube on ductility.
