Abstract

This experiment aimed to determine the optimal planting density for different varieties of silage maize in Shandong Province.Four planting densities(65 000,75 000,85 000 and 95 000 plants/hm2)were tested to investigate their effects on agronomic traits,yield,and nutritional components of three maize varieties:Yufeng 303,Zhengdan 958 and Yayu 8.The results showed that planting density had no significant effects on plant height,stem diameter,green retention,ear width,ear length,or ear height in any of the three varieties(P>0.05).When the planting density was 75 000 plants/hm2,Yufeng 303 had the highest yield of fresh grass and hay,and the lowest leaf dry weight and stem dry weight.When planting density was 65 000 plants/hm2,Zhengdan 958 had the highest yield of fresh grass and hay,and the lowest leaf dry weight and stem dry weight.When the planting density was 75 000 plants/hm2,the yield of fresh grass and hay of Yayu 8 was the highest,and the dry leaf weight and stem weight were the lowest.When the planting density of Yufeng 303,Zhengdan 958 and Yayu 8 was 65 000 plants/hm2,the dry weight of ear was the highest,which was significantly higher than that of other planting densities(P<0.05).When the planting density was 65 000 plants/hm2,the crude protein(CP)content of Zhengdan 958 and Yayu 8 was the highest,which were 9.21%and 9.15%,respectively.When planting density was 65 000 plants/hm2,the crude fat(EE)content of Yayu 8 was significantly higher than that of 85 000 plants/hm2 and 95 000 plants/hm2(P<0.05).The starch content of Yufeng 303 and Yayu 8 was significantly higher than that of 65 000 and 95 000 plants/hm2 when the planting density was 75 000 plants/hm2(P<0.05).Starch content of Zhengdan 958 was significantly higher when planting density was 65 000 plants/hm2 than when planting density was 85 000 and 95 000 plants/hm2(P<0.05).When the planting density was 75 000 plants/hm2,the relative feeding value(RFV)of Yufeng 303 was significantly higher than that of 65 000 and 95 000 plants/hm2(P<0.05).When the planting density was 65 000 plants/hm2,the RFV of Zhengdan 958 was significantly higher than that of other planting densities(P<0.05).When the planting density was 75 000 plants/hm2,the RFV of Yayu 8 was significantly higher than that of 95 000 plants/hm2(P<0.05).The study indicates that the optimal planting density is 75 000 plants/hm2 for Yufeng 303 and Yayu 8,and 65 000 plants/hm2 for Zhengdan 958.
