Abstract

The classification of surrounding rock plays a critical role in the survey and design stages of hydraulic structures.The geological conditions of the Lancang River GX Hydropower Hub area are complex and in a high in-situ stress state.The commonly used engineering geological classification method in high in-situ stress regions for hydropower systems(referred to as the HC method)degrades surrounding rock quality based on the strength-stress ratio.In this study,grounded in detailed engineering geological surveys,triaxial mechanical tests were conducted and a novel classification method based on statistical damage to quantitatively assess the impact of high in-situ stress on surrounding rock quality was proposed.The new method modified the HC classification by incorporating a statistical damage value of the rock mass as a reduction factor in the rock quality rating,replacing the direct degradation approach for high-stress conditions in the HC method.The method was applied to classify the surrounding rock in the GX underground cavern,yielding classification results based on damage mechanics.After a comparison between the new method and the original classification method,the validity of the new method was confirmed.The results indicate that the method not only reflects the positive correlation between increased in-situ stress and surrounding rock quality deterioration,but also provides enhanced accuracy and reliability.It enables efficient and precise classification of surrounding rock in high-stress regions,offering significant theoretical value for evaluating rock mass quality under high-stress conditions.
