Abstract

In order to understand the transient characteristics of pintle variable thrust solid rocket motor(pintle SRM),a transi-ent numerical calculation model was established based on the dynamic grid method,and User Defined Functions(UDF)program was written to simulate the movement law of the pintle and the mass flow rate at the inlet.The effects of the pintle adjusting process on the transient characteristics of the pintle SRM were studied.The results show that the dynamic response process of the chamber pressure and thrust of the pintle SRM is closely related to the pintle working state,pintle moving speed and pintle moving stroke.There is a large gap between the transient value achieved by the reciprocating movement of the pintle and the steady-state value achieved by the one-way movement,and change of thrust has a significant negative adjustment characteristic.In the one-way movement,the response time of the chamber pressure and thrust when the initial state of the pintle is closed is less than 1/10 of when the initial state is open.The moving speed of the pintle will affect the adjustment process and response time of the chamber pressure and thrust,and the adjustment ratio of thrust is consistent after reaching the steady state.With the increase of pintle stroke,the response time of the pintle SRM to reach the stable state also increases,and the thrust negative adjustment can be observed when the throat stroke is larger.
