Abstract

Objective To explore the impact of parental expectation on literacy and numeracy of children aged 3-6 years under the"double reduction"policy and its underlying mechanisms.Methods A survey was conducted among parents of children aged 3-6 years by using the parental expectation scale,early human capability index,parenting style questionnaire,and attitudes towards"double reduction"policy questionnaire.A total of 584 questionnaires were distributed through Credamo platform and offline channels,and 549 valid questionnaires were collected.The relevant data were statistically analyzed.Results Parental expectation positively predicted children's literacy and numeracy through the mediating effects of inductive reasoning and warmth in parenting styles.The moderating effect of parents'attitudes toward the"double reduction"policy revealed that when parents were not concerned about"double reduction"policy,their expectation positively predicted inductive reasoning in parenting styles,and parental expectation could influence children's literacy and numeracy through inductive reasoning.However,when parents were concerned about the"double reduction"policy,their expectation did not predict inductive reasoning in parenting styles,and parental expectation could not influence children's literacy and numeracy through inductive reasoning.Conclusion Parental expectation can influence the literacy and numeracy of children aged 3-6 years through parenting styles.Parents'attitudes toward the"double reduction"policy moderate the relationship between parental expectation and inductive reasoning in parenting styles,as well as the mediating effect of inductive reasoning.
