Widening or narrowing?The impact of the establishment of major grain-producing areas on urban-rural income gap

Abstract
To verify whether the division of food functional zones affects the integrated development of urban and rural areas in China,this study takes the establishment of major grain-producing areas in 2004 as a quasi-natural experiment study object,and utilizes a Difference-in-Differences(DID)model to examine the impact of the major grain-producing area policy on the urban-rural income gap and its underlying mechanisms.The study finds that:1)The establishment of major grain-producing areas significantly widens the urban-rural income gap.The income gap between urban and rural areas in these regions is larger compared to those in non-major grain-producing areas.This conclusion is robust confirmed by various robust tests including variable substitution,sample adjustment,and the use of a PSM-DID model.2)The mechanism analysis indicates that the allocation of family labor resources and corresponding income structure,urban bias in local fiscal expenditure.The regional land use structure are the key pathways,through which the establishment of major grain-producing areas affects the urban-rural income gap.3)Contextual analysis shows that industrial structure has a positive moderating effect on the impact of the establishment of major grain-producing areas.This study suggests that the main production areas have delayed the process of local urban-rural integration while taking on heavy responsibiltiy of ensuring national food security.These findings provide valuable insights for future improvements in the supporting policies for major grain-producing areas.关键词
