Abstract

[Objective]This study aims to establish a rapid and accurate method for determining the moisture content in reconstituted tobacco for heat-non-burn cigarettes(HNB).[Methods]Based on identifying the reasons why the oven-drying method is unsuitable,and using the GC method as a reference,the applicability of the rapid moisture meter method(RM method)and the Karl Fischer oven method(CKF method)was investigated for different types of samples.[Results]1)The RM method can be used to measure samples without 1,2-propylene glycol smoking agents at a heating temperature of 75℃,with a sample size of 1 g,and under automatic heating mode.2)The CKF method can be used for the moisture determination of samples containing 1,2-propanediol under the conditions of a sample quantity of 0.1 g,a carrier gas flow rate of 70 mL/min,a cassette oven heating temperature of 110℃~130℃,and an endpoint drift criterion of 20 μL/min~30 μL/min.3)The spiked recoveries of the two methods were in the range of 95.66%~101.32%,with relative standard deviations in precision tests between 1.24%~2.73%,showing no significant difference from the GC method results(P>0.05).[Conclusion]The RM and CKF methods are simple,require short measurement time,and produce reliable results.They can be used to determine the moisture content of different types of reconstituted tobacco in heated cigarettes.If the smoking agent in the sample is unknown,it is recommended to prioritize the CKF method for moisture determination.
