Abstract

To investigate the spatial distribution patterns of the physical and chemical properties of sediments at the inlet of Zhaitang Reservoir,this study employed the Potential Ecological Risk Index,Nemerow Pollution Index,and Organic Index to assess sediment quality and pollution levels.The potential resource utilization strategies were explored according to the risk level.The results indicated that pollutant concentrations in the sediments exhibited a general west-to-east increasing trend.Heavy metal concentrations at all sampling points were below the screening thresholds specified in GB 15618,indicating a low potential ecological risk.Nutrient levels were classified as relatively unpolluted,and no organic contamination was detected,suggesting an overall low level of sediment pollution.In the western section of the study area,the sediment was primarily composed of gravel,therefore,the sediment was recommended for local reuse as construction material with particle size classification.In contrast,the eastern section was dominated by sand with characterization of low water and nutrient retention capacity.However,the favorable particle size distribution facilitated the repurpose of construction sand due to the sediment fractions finer than 4.75 mm.These findings provide a scientific and technical basis for reservoir dredging and sediment management.
