Abstract

Wear-resistant PEK-PPI/CF composites were prepared using amorphous poly(aryl ether ketone)(PEK-PPI)as the matrix resin and carbon fiber(CF)as the wear-resistant filler through the ball-milling and high temperature molding methods.The effects of carbon fiber length and content on the friction and wear properties and mechanical strength of the composites were investigated.The results indicated that the incorporation of carbon fiber displayed a positive impact on the formation of transferring film and a reduction in the friction coefficient,thus effectively enhanced the wear-resistant properties of PEK-PPI/CF composites.The wear-resistant properties of the composites were enhanced with the length and content of carbon fiber increasing.When the dimension of carbon fiber was 50 mesh and its content was 40%,the volume wear rate of the composites was lowest to 5.782 ×10-16,whose wear resistance was improved by two orders of magnitude compared to pure PEK-PPI resin.The thermal conductivity of the composites was significantly improved by adding carbon fiber and was beneficial to the diffusion of temperature near the friction point,which eventually generate a reduced volumetric wear rate.
