Analysis on Inertia Support Capability of Modular Multilevel Converter Capacitor Energy for AC System

Abstract
The modular multilevel converter based high voltage direct current(MMC-HVDC)transmission system has the potential to use the submodule capacitor energy storage to support the inertia of the AC grid.However,the existing research generally believes that the inertia provided by the MMC-HVDC system is limited by its energy storage time constant.Compared with the synchronous generators,the effect is weak,and there is a lack of quantitative indicators to measure its support strength.In view of the above problems,based on the frequency response model of the MMC-HVDC transmission system,a quantitative analysis method for the inertia support of the single-end flexible DC converter station to the AC system is proposed,and the MMC-HVDC equivalent inertia constant is proposed as a measuring indicator.The support power source and support effect of different control strategies are analyzed,and the equivalent inertia constant under different control strategies is calculated.The theory is further extended to the modular multilevel converter based multi-terminal high voltage direct current(MMC-MTDC)system.The proposed equivalent inertia constant is modified to make it suitable for the MMC-MTDC system,and the enhancement of the support strength with the increase of the number of terminals and the total energy storage of capacitors is discussed.The simulation model of three-terminal MMC-MTDC power grid is built in PSCAD environment,and the simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed quantitative analysis method.关键词
