Abstract

In the current digital economy era,strategically deploying and utilizing digital technologies such as the Internet of Things,blockchain,and digital platforms within a supply chain network presents both opportunities and challenges.This tactic serves as a pivotal avenue through which firms can gain competitive advantages and achieve high-quality growth.The primary objective of supply chain digitalization initiatives is to connect upstream and downstream organizations,enabling extensive real-time data exchange and information sharing,thereby fostering digital connectivity.Another goal is information alignment,which involves synchronizing infrastructure and resources across organizations to ensure the consistency of information flows.Meanwhile,crucial information about the business environment and customer behavior can be extracted by combining and analyzing the vast amounts of data generated and collected by digital technologies.Big data predictive analytics,which leverages statistical methods to forecast future trends by examining historical data,has become a powerful tool in strategic management by enhancing decision-making processes and operational efficiencies across various sectors.Previous studies have examined the impact of digital connectivity or information alignment on firm performance.However,research on the mechanism through which these factors create competitive advantage via big data predictive analytics capability-and the influence of the industrial technology environment on this process-remains limited.In response to the scholarly call for further investigation into the impact of digitalization on organizational performance from an interorganizational perspective,this study,grounded in the resource-based view,adopts the theoretical logic of"resources-capabilities-competitive advantage". To conduct this research,a questionnaire survey was employed to collect data from Chinese manufacturing enterprises that are engaged in big data.Targeting mid-to-senior-level managers,the study received 293 valid responses.Data on industry digital technology intensity were sourced from the CSMAR database and calculated as the average digital technology intensity of listed companies within the industry.To test the proposed hypotheses,hierarchical linear regression models were employed.The results reveal the significant positive effects of digital connectivity and information alignment on competitive advantage after controlling for variables.Moreover,big data predictive analytics capability partially mediates the relationship between both digital connectivity and competitive advantage and between information alignment and competitive advantage.Additionally,industry digital technology intensity positively moderates the positive effects of digital connectivity and information alignment on competitive advantage,as well as their impacts on big data predictive analytics capability.Furthermore,the bootstrap method(with a 95%confidence level)was used to further test the mediating role of big data predictive analytics capability.In addition,the SPSS PROCESS plugin Model 8 was used to further examine the moderated mediation effects.The results indicate that industry digital technology intensity positively moderates the mediating role of big data predictive analytics capability.To ensure robustness,several tests were performed,as follows:1)Regression models were re-run after adjusting the measurement methods of key variables and adding control variables.2)Subgroup analyses were conducted for different types of enterprises.3)The impacts of digital connectivity and information alignment on big data predictive analytics capability were re-examined after using instrumental variables to address possible endogeneity issues.All tests confirm the robustness of this study's results. This study has important theoretical and practical implications.First,the results not only illustrate the direct impact of digital connectivity and information alignment on competitive advantage;they also reveal that their value largely stems from serving as resources that enhance a firm's big data predictive analytics capability.This insight offers valuable information on how digitalization influences competitive advantage from an interorganizational perspective and contributes to the evolving discourse on supply chain digitalization.Second,this study explores the moderating effect of industry digital technology intensity from a complementary resource perspective.This addresses a gap in existing literature,which primarily focuses on the influence of environmental turbulence.By delving into an industry-level analysis,this study complements existing scholarly knowledge and provides fresh insights into the heterogeneous effects of digitalization actions in different industries.Moreover,this research underscores the importance of integrating resources across organizational boundaries to build big data predictive analytics capability.This responds to the call in existing literature to explore the development and impact of big data predictive analytics capability in a supply chain and network context.Lastly,this study provides strategic insights and practical guidance for managers by highlighting the importance of leveraging digital technologies to reshape buyer-supplier interactions.It also underlines the necessity of developing big data predictive analytics capability to fully harness the potential of the massive data obtained through these technologies.
