Abstract

Livestock and poultry farming waste management represents a significant anthro-pogenic source of atmospheric methane(CH4)emissions,and the oxidation process facilita-ted by methanotrophic bacteria offers an effective strategy to control these emissions.The growth of methanotrophic bacteria relies on the availability of external nitrogen sources,making wastewater from livestock farms,which is rich in nitrogen,a potential candidate for serving as a nitrogen source in biological CH4 removal processes.Hence,the exploration of a biological technology pathway that can simultaneously purify CH4 emissions and wastewater from livestock farms is of utmost importance.In this study,two biofilters(BTF1 with inor-ganic salt medium as the liquid phase and BTF2 with simulated livestock wastewater as the liquid phase)were operated to verify their effectiveness in the simultaneous purification of simulated CH4 containing exhaust gas and wastewater from livestock farms.The results in-dicated that BTF2 demonstrated certain effectiveness in purifying CH4 and wastewater from livestock farms,achieving a removal efficiency of 54%for CH4 in exhaust gas and 33%and 43%for total nitrogen(TN)and ammonium nitrogen(NH4+—N)in wastewater,respec-tively.However,these indicators were slightly lower than those of the control group.To further enhance purification efficiency,a mixed bacterial consortium consisting of Methylosi-nus trichosporium OB3b and Paracoccus pantotorphus ATCC 35512 was employed to strengthen the biofilters.This significantly improved the performance of both biofilters,with CH4 removal efficiencies increasing to above 99%and removal efficiencies for TN,NH4+—N,and COD in wastewater also substantially increasing to above 90%.The findings of this study not only provide a practical technical solution for the simultaneous purification of CH4 containing exhaust gas and wastewater in livestock farming,but also make positive contributions to promoting greenhouse gas emissions reduction and safeguarding ecological environmental security in livestock farms.This research holds significant practical implica-tions and environmental protection value.
