Facilitators and barriers to post-traumatic growth in psychiatric nurses after exposure to patient violence:a qualitative study

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the promoting and hindering factors of post-traumatic growth of psychiatric nurses after violent incidents,in order to provide basis for the psychological construction of nurses after violent incidents.Methods:A descriptive qualitative research approach was employed.Purposive sampling was employed to select psychiatric nurses who had experienced patient violence from a tertiary Grade A general hospital in Changsha City,Hunan Province,and a tertiary Grade A specialized hospital in Henan Province from March to May 2023.Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted,followed by thematic content analysis to systematically identify and refine key themes.Results:Facilitators were categorized into three overarching themes(personal competence factors,coping style factors,organizational context factors)with six subthemes.Barriers emerged as two primary themes(psychological resilience factors,post-event handling factors)comprising five subthemes.Conclusions:Post-traumatic growth among psychiatric nurses is influenced by both barriers and facilitators.Clinical administrators should prioritize addressing nurses'psychological needs following patient violence exposure,establish hospital-wide violence prevention cultures,and integrate pre-service training programs that enhance knowledge preparedness,skill development,and psychological resilience cultivation.关键词
