Abstract

Comparative cultivation trials were carried out for grafted eggplant(with Solanum torvum as the stock and'Heiyuanba 2'as the scion)and self-rooted eggplant in clay soil areas in southern Hunan.The growth and development,fruit appearance quality,root traits,yield,and disease resistance were compared.The results showed that grafted eggplant had stronger growth potential than self-rooted eggplant at the middle and late stages of development.The plant height and crown diameter of grafted eggplant were significantly higher than those of self-rooted eggplant at the peak fruiting stage and end harvesting stage.Grafted eggplant and self-rooted eggplant showed the same fruit shape,fruit skin color,and flesh color.The fruits per plant of grafted eggplant were more than those of self-rooted eggplant obviously.The high-yielding stage of grafted eggplant concentrated at the middle and late stages.The roots of grafted eggplant were easier to grow in clay soil,with the number,vertical depth,and transverse diameter of lateral roots and the transverse diameter of capillary roots significantly higher than those of self-rooted eggplant.In conclusion,grafted eggplant outperformed self-rooted eggplant in plant growth potential,fruit appearance quality,total yield,and root adaptability.Accordingly,it is worthwhile to popularize the planting of grafted eggplant in clay soil in southern Hunan.
