The Subtle Rhetoric of Female Characters in Dream of the Red Mansions and Its Ethical Functions

Abstract
The female characters in"Dream of the Red Mansions"excel at employing euphemistic rhetorical devices to convey their emotions,attitudes,and stances,manifested primarily through typical forms such as allusions,two-part allegorical sayings,eu-phemisms,puns,blank spaces,irony,circumlocutions,and character dissection,as well as non-typical forms like metaphors,similes,metonymies,and rhetorical questions.The extensive use of euphemistic rhetoric by the female characters in the novel essen-tially aligns with the standards of"feminine virtues,"emphasizing moral order.It embodies ethical functions that include expressing politeness through tactful language,concealing wisdom within circuitous expressions,demonstrating respect with elegant words,and showcasing agility with colloquialisms,thereby highlighting the ethical and pragmatic wisdom of women under feudal ethics.The con-cepts embodied in the euphemistic rhetoric of the female characters in"Dream of the Red Mansions,"such as the"harmony-as-the-most-valuable"philosophy of life,the"gentle and sincere"poetic tradition,and the"virtuous and talented"female image,have posi-tive guiding significance for contemporary female education.关键词
