Abstract

In response to the needs of a container terminal project on the west coast of Africa,a physical model test for ship mooring was conducted.This paper investigated the motion of 50 000 t class container ships at different berthing positions,the tension in mooring lines,and the response of fenders,preliminarily summarizing the allowable working wave height under the influence of swell waves.The results indicate that the ship's response increases proportionally with the height and period of waves,and the changes in ship motion under the influence of swell waves are significantly greater than those under wind waves.A decrease in the ship's load made the motion of the ship and the tension in mooring lines increase.The wind's effect added additional constraints on the ship,reducing its response.Under the influence of swell waves,the greater the wave period,the lower the allowable operational and berthing wave height.The dock design should comprehensively consider the impact of wave height and period on berth stability to ensure the safety of dock operations.
