A Comparative study on energy consumption of perpendicular and parallel layouts on automated container terminals

Abstract
Automation can improve the operational efficiency of container terminals,leading to the construction of an increasing number of automated container terminals.Therefore,the layout design of these automated terminals has become a key issue.Numerous factors affect ACT layout,while limited studies have analyzed the influence of container trans-shipment on ACT layout.In this paper,the proportion of container trans-shipment was selected as a key parameter in order to study its influence.To compare the differences in perpendicular and parallel ACT layouts with varying proportions of container trans-shipment,energy consumption models for both perpendicular and parallel layouts were constructed based on the assumption of ideal operating conditions.Energy consumption was then calculated through typical cases.The research results indicate that different proportions of container trans-shipment apply to different yard layouts.When the proportion is less than 17%or greater than 92%,the parallel layout is more suitable;when it is between 21%and 88%,the perpendicular layout is more suitable;and when it is greater than 17%but less than 19%or greater than 21%but less than 23%,there is no significant difference between the two layouts.This paper can provide terminal operators with references for designing ACT layouts.关键词
