Study on the Impact of Ultraviolet Disinfection on Bacteria and Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Atmospheric Particles

Abstract
Particles serve as crucial carriers for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs)and their host bacteria in the air,facilitating long-distance transport and potentially exacerbating regional or even global bacterial resistance pollution.Ultraviolet(UV)disinfection is an economical and convenient means of sterilization widely employed in environmental air disinfection,yet its efficacy in removing ARGs from atmospheric particles remains poorly understood.This study investigates the impact of UV disinfection on bacteria and ARGs in atmospheric particles through a series of simulated experiments.The results indicate that UV disinfection effectively reduces the levels of bacteria and ARGs in atmos-pheric particles,thereby lowering the potential risk of ARGs transfer.There are significant differences in the removal rates of various types of ARGs by UV treatment(p<0.01),and UV disinfection alters the composition of ARGs in atmospheric particles.At a UV dosage of 120 mJ/cm2,the removal rates for cultivable bacteria,16S rRNA,total ARGs,and mobile genetic elements(MGEs)exceed 99%,91.6%,65.4%,and 80%respectively.The efficiency of bacteria removal by UV disinfection far sur-passes that of ARGs,resulting in a further enrichment of ARGs post-disinfection,with a relative abun-dance increase of 39.8%,which could lead to an increased proportion of resistant bacteria in environ-mental air.关键词
