A Teaching Experiment of Place-Remaking on University Campuses in Historical Urban Environments:An Exploration of Design Research Based on EvoMass Optimization Tool
摘要
Abstract
Contemporary university campuses situated within historical urban areas have undergone dual transformations in both physical and social environments, giving rise to the design theme of place-remaking on campuses.Environmental performance and mixed-use emerge as two critical design topics within this design theme, with their integration forming a composite design objective worth further exploration. This paper presents the teaching experiment of place-remaking on Nanjing University of Arts(NUA)campus as a design research case study investigating approaches to achieve this composite goal.Firstly, this study focuses on the problem framing for campus place-remaking design. The NUA campus, located in the northwest area of the walled city of Nanjing,is a representative case of university campuses within historical urban contexts.Through analyzing its changing physical and social environments, the study establishes the necessity for place-remaking on this campus.Four sites with distinct environmental performance and mixed-use requirements are selected for place-remaking design:a teaching building cluster,a library,a student service center, and a student dormitory complex.Through the lenses of design synthesis and design optimization, design challenges in achieving the composite objective in this place-remaking design are analyzed.Secondly, this study proposes technical solutions for addressing the above design challenges through analyzing the development strategies of EvoMass optimization tool.Compared to other optimization tools,EvoMass demonstrates superior capabilities in rapid design generation and optimization, exhibiting particular efficacy in human-machine collaborative workflows. Its two development strategies—(1)design ideation based on massing design and(2)performance-driven massing optimization—provide technical solutions for addressing complex design challenges.Thirdly, this study investigates methods for optimization-tool assisted conceptual exploration. While EvoMass is typically deployed as a pre-conceptualization aid in standard workflow which is valued for workflow efficiency, however its untimely intervention on design exploration stage also has a negative effect, hindering the emergence of designers'original concepts.Based on the reflection of the characteristics of the conventional path to utilizing EvoMass, the regular design workflow is accordingly adjusted. The first step of the adjustment is to give designers sufficient time for conceptual exploration and postpone the time of optimization tools'intervention in the design workflow. The second step is to add the pre-constraint parameters into the massing generator of EvoMass through the parametric translation of original design concepts.Although this teaching experiment has shortcomings in design exploration and data analysis due to some constrained conditions, the adjusted workflow yielded conceptual design with practical significance and creativity demonstrating EvoMass's versatile application potential. This teaching experiment not only actively addresses the design theme of place-remaking on campuses in historical urban contexts but also establishes a human-machine collaborative workflow model revolving around design problem framing, design ideation and design conceptualization and other fundamental design questions.关键词
