Abstract

With the continuous improvement of China's high-speed rail network,some conventional railway lines and stations have gradually become idle.Herein,a case study based on the Jingmen Railway was carried out.Certain sections have become gradually unused through social development,resulting in the under-utilisation of valuable resources.In this context,an in-depth investigation into the dynamic visual landscapes of conventional railway lines was conducted to realize the high-efficiency utilisation of resources and promote the development of suburb tourism.In terms of the research methods,Jingmen Railway was chosen as the specific research subject.The visual landscapes experienced during the journey on a conventional train are meticulously reconstructed and carefully analyzed.Through a collection of remote-sensing data and satellite maps,field surveys,and relevant literature review,it is found that dynamic visual landscapes of conventional railways are characteristic of continuity,landscape visual-field constraints,and dynamicity.Subsequently,the spatio-temporal relationship between vision and landscape during the railway-viewing process is determined based on the digital elevation model(DEM)data by using the geographic information system(GIS)technology.Further,a dynamic visual landscape interface model is constructed.In addition,a set of analytical evaluation criteria and indexes for railway dynamic visual landscapes is established systematically through the analytic hierarchy process(AHP).The indexes cover four aspects,including dynamic visual sensitivity,natural landscape resources,cultural landscape resources,and the integration degree of visual landscapes.An empirical assessment of the landscapes along the Jingmen Railway is carried out using the constructed model and evaluation method.The evaluation results indicate that the sections in Xiehejian Village,Dingjiatan Village,the southern side of the Yongding River Bend,and Wangping Village achieve the highest scores,while the sections in Liuliqu Village,the northern part of Chengzi Village,the eastern part of Dingjiatan Village,and both sides of the Yongding River Bend in the middle of the railway line achieve the lowest scores.Based on the evaluation results,an improvement strategy of"one-axis,four-belts,four-zones"is specifically proposed for the Mendaduan section of the Jingmen Railway."one-axis"refers to a landscape corridor centred on the railway,linking the surrounding areas within a 500-meter radius."four-belts"integrate the high-scoring areas with adjacent scenic spots to form themed landscape corridors."four-zones"designate the four areas with the highest scores as core scenic attractions.Specific measures include optimizing the vegetation layout along the railway to enhance landscape continuity,reasonable setting of landscape appreciation platforms,and so on.This study not only deepens our understanding of railway visual landscape analysis,but also provides a systematic method for evaluating the visual landscape quality along conventional railways and identifying key areas for renewal and transformation.This study offers new insights and directions for the revitalisation and adaptive reuse of idle railway resources.By incorporating the characteristics of dynamic visual landscapes into research on the reuse of idle railway resources,this study innovatively constructs a railway dynamic visual landscape model,re-evaluating railway landscapes from a new perspective.However,this study has certain limitations,such as difficulties in the acquisition of precise experimental data,regional specificity of cases,and the necessity of practical validation of renewal strategies.
