摘要

Abstract

Electrochemical water softening technology has emerged as a promising method for water hardness removal due to the advantages of no requiring chemical additives,high automation,and environmental friendliness.However,the application of this technology in municipal and industrial sectors is still limited because of the low efficiency of hydroxide ion(OH-)utilization.This paper analyzes the causes of low OH-utilization and summarizes the research in three areas,that are,cathode design,reactor unit design,and integrated process application.The softening performance of different electrode structures or reactor units are compared,including three-dimensional structured electrodes,composite electrodes,modified electrodes,membrane-free reactor units,and membrane-based reactor units.The paper also discusses the challenges faced by electrochemical water softening technology in terms of mass transfer and cathode regeneration.It is emphasized that future studies should focus more on the application of electrochemical water softening technology in municipal sectors,aiming to achieve high softening rates,low energy consumption,and good economic benefits,thereby promoting widespread application and development of this technology.
