The Influence of Parental Expectations on Depression Among Senior High School Students:The Mediating Effects of Parental Psychological Control and Academic Stress

Abstract
Objective:To explore the influence of parental expectations on depression among high school students and to examine the mediating effects of parental psychological control and academic stress.Methods:A survey was conducted among 2,784 high school students from 8 schools across 6 provinces in China using the parental expectation scale,parental psychological control questionnaire,academic stress questionnaire for middle school students,and children's depression in-ventory.Results:Parental expectations were significantly positively correlated with depression(r=0.26,P<0.01),and the to-tal effect of parental expectations on depression was significant(β=0.27,P<0.001).Mediation analysis showed that both the independent and chain mediation effects of parental psychological control and academic pressure were significant,with me-diation effect values of 0.08(95%CI:0.05~0.10),0.11(95%CI:0.09~0.13),and 0.12(95%CI:0.11~0.14),respectively.However,the direct effect of parental expectations on depression was not significant and was of the opposite sign compared to the mediation effects.Conclusion:The impact of parental expectations on senior high school students'depression is fully mediated and masked by parental psychological control and academic stress.关键词
