The Influence of Maternal Parenting Styles on Children's Externalizing Problem Behaviors in the Context of Grandparent-Parent Co-parenting:A Moderated Mediation Model

Abstract
Objective:This study aimed to explore the relationship between maternal parenting styles and externalizing problem behaviors in children within intergenerational co-parenting families,as well as the potential mediating role of parent-child relationship and the moderating role of parent-grandparent co-parenting.Methods:A total of 326 children and their mothers from intergenerational co-parenting families were surveyed using questionnaires on parenting styles,chil-dren's social competence and behavior,parent-child relationships,and parent-grandparent co-parenting.Results:(1)Ma-ternal authoritative parenting was significantly negatively correlated with children's externalizing problem behaviors,whereas authoritarian parenting was significantly positively correlated with such behaviors in children;(2)The parent-child relationship served as a mediating factor in the association between maternal authoritative parenting and children's exter-nalizing problems,and it partially mediated the relationship between authoritarian parenting and the emergence of external-izing behaviors;(3)The co-parenting relationship between parents and grandparents moderated the connection between ma-ternal authoritative parenting and children's externalizing problem behaviors.Conclusion:Maternal parenting style exerts both direct and indirect influences on children's externalizing problem behaviors,with the indirect effect being channeled through the parent-child relationship.A high-quality co-parenting relationship between parents and grandparents can strengthen the negative association between authoritative parenting and externalizing problem behaviors.In families where the parent-grandparent co-parenting relationship is of low quality,it is especially crucial for mothers to employ authorita-tive parenting style to facilitate positive child development.关键词
