Parental Emotional Warmth and Mental Health of Rural Left-Behind Children:The Mediating Roles of Loneliness and Perceived Social Support

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the relationship between parental emotional warmth and mental health among rural left-behind children,as well as the mediating roles of loneliness and perceived social support.Methods:An online survey was conducted on 479 left-behind children from grades three to seven in six counties and cities in Hunan Province,using the short-form Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran for Chinese(s-EMBU-C),the perceived social support scale(PSSS),the short-form UCLA loneliness scale(ULS-8),and the brief instrument on psychological health of youths(BIOPHY).Re-sults:Parental emotional warmth,loneliness,and social support were all significantly correlated with mental health.Further mediation effect analysis revealed that loneliness and social support played a full chain mediating role between parental emotional warmth and mental health of left-behind children.Conclusion:Parents'migration for work is not a direct factor affecting the mental health of left-behind children,while emotional warmth and social support provided by parents are ben-eficial for improving their mental health level.Loneliness is a risk factor for the mental health of left-behind children.关键词
