The Effect of Excluders'Social Status on Reactive Aggressive Behavior of Excluded Elementary School Children:The Role of Emotion Regulation Strategies

Abstract
Objective:The present study conducted two formal experiments to examine the impact of the social status of the excluder on the reactive aggressive behavior of primary school children who experience exclusion,and to investigate whether various emotion regulation strategies act as moderators.Methods:Experiment 1 utilized the individual versus acci-dental exclusion paradigm to explore the changes in reactive aggressive behavior among primary school children who experi-enced exclusion in high and low status exclusion situations.Experiment 2 examined the role of emotion regulation strategies by manipulating cognitive reappraisal and expression suppression strategies.Results:(1)Children who were excluded by low-status peers exhibited stronger reactive aggressive behavior compared to those excluded by high-status peers.(2)The cognitive reappraisal strategy significantly reduced the reactive aggressive behavior of primary school children who experi-enced exclusion,whereas the expression suppression strategy significantly intensified their reactive aggressive behavior.Conclusion:Exclusion by low-status peers is a greater risk factor for more intense reactive aggressive behavior among pri-mary school children who experience exclusion,highlighting the profound influence of the excluder's social status.Com-pared with the expression suppression strategy,the use of cognitive reappraisal strategy will significantly reduce the genera-tion of reactive aggression among primary school children who experience exclusion.关键词
