Abstract
In both The Plant Wife and The Vegetarian, novels by contemporary Korean writer Han Kang, winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize for Literature, the imagery of plant metamorphosis appears as a metaphor for women’s existential and psychological dilemmas. The theme of plant metamorphosis has a long history in literature, beginning with Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which mainly points to women’s resistance and assertion of self-will in the face of oppression.Under the anthropocentric notion of the hierarchy of souls, plant metamorphosis,as the"retreat"from man to plant, always seems to be annotated as a kind of tragedy on the"escape line,"thus expressing a critique of oppression and domination based on the logic of the subject-object dichotomy. However, when we jump out of the dualism and anthropocentrism perspective, plant metamorphosis becomes a natural way to perceive all things in heaven and earth,to obtain spiritual freedom, and to reach the"cosmic soul",and the plant metamorphosis in Han Kang’s novels thus possesses the philosophical high level of soul care, which is also in line with the intrinsic temperament of the East Asian literature.关键词
