Abstract

During the long-term operation of XLPE cables,insulation aging due to various disturbances like electrical,thermal,and mechanical factors significantly affects thermal performance and ampacity.To explore how insulation performs under electrocaloric effect and assess the ampacity of aging cable,a 480 day electric-thermal combined aging test was conducted on three 110 kV cables.Based on the test,samples from different aging stages(0,180 and 480 days)were obtained for analysis.In addition,a current-carrying temperature rise experiment was performed on sample cables to explore thermal characteristics of the aging cable insulation layer.According to the experimental data,the COMSOL was employed to evaluate ampacity for both double-loop trench laying cables and double-loop pipe laying cables.The results indicate that thermal resistance initially decreases,then increases with aging time.Additionally,the ampacity of both types of cables initially increases,then decreases with aging.However,the overall increase is not more than 4.95%,the decrease is not more than 3.2%,and the cable can still meet the requirements of operation and maintenance.
