Study on the in vitro Antibacterial and Antioxidant Activities of Seven Phytogenic Feed Additives

Abstract
[Objective]The purpose of this experiment was to study the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of seven phytogenic feed additives,which provided reference for enriching the types of feed additives and their applications in livestock and poultry feed.[Method]The bacteriostatic properties of seven phytogenic feed additives,including oregano oil,tea polyphenols,rosmarinic acid,icariin,phytosterol ester,Fagopyrum cymosum extracts and extracts of Rosa roxburghii pomace,against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were determined by Kirby-Bauer test and double dilution method based on resazurin indicator,and the differences in antioxidant properties of seven phytogenic feed additives were determined by micro method.[Result]The results of in vitro bacteriostatic test showed that oregano oil had the best bacteriostatic effects on E.coli and S.aureus,as the MIC and MBC against E.coli were 3.125 µL/mL and 6.25 µL/mL,respectively,and MIC and MBC against S.aureus were both 1.562 5 µL/mL.Tea polyphenols,rosmarinic acid and F.cymosum extracts had obvious bacteriostatic effects on S.aureus,which was greater than E.coli.The results of antioxidant test showed that the scavenging rate of ascorbic acid,rosmarinic acid,tea polyphenols,oregano oil and F.cymosum extracts on DPPH increased with increasing concentration,while the scavenging rate of phytosterol ester,icariin and extracts of R.roxburghii pomace on DPPH maintained low.The scavenging capability of seven PEAs on ABTS also improved.The scavenging rate of oregano oil and tea polyphenols on DPPH and ABTS were higher than that of ascorbic acid,and the scavenging effect of rosmarinic acid was similar to that of ascorbic acid.The antioxidant activity of each sample was in the order of oregano oil>tea polyphenols>ascorbic acid>rosmarinic acid>F.cymosum extract>extracts of R.roxburghii pomace>icariin>phytosterol ester.[Conclusion]Oregano oil,tea polyphenols and rosmarinic acid have obvious antibacterial and antioxidant activities,while F.cymosum extract and extracts of R.roxburghii pomace have certain antibacterial and antioxidant activities,which have potential value for development as feed additives.关键词
