Relationship between frailty and cognitive function in elderly individuals in Chongming District,Shanghai:the mediating effect of depressive symptoms

Abstract
Objective To explore the relationship between frailty and cognitive function in elderly individuals in Chongming District,Shanghai,and to analyze the mediating role of depressive symptoms in this relationship.Methods A total of 550 elderly individuals aged 65 and above from Chongming District,Shanghai,were selected.Participants underwent the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE),Geriatric Depression Scale(GDS),and frailty assessment.Logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent risk factors for cognitive impairment,and a mediation model was applied to analyze the me-diating effect of GDS scores on the relationship between frailty and cognitive function.Results The prevalence of cognitive impairment among participants was 14.0%.Participants with cognitive impairment had higher proportions of frailty and de-pression.After adjusting for relevant covariates,frailty(OR=3.52,P=0.023)and depression(OR=1.85,P=0.036)showed a significantly positive correlation with cognitive impairment.Mediation analysis revealed a significant negative cor-relation between frailty and MMSE scores(β=-3.3219,P<0.001).GDS scores mediated the relationship between frailty and cognitive function,accounting for 8.8%of the total effect.Conclusion This study found that frailty and depression are positively correlated with cognitive impairment in the elderly,and depressive symptoms partially mediate the correlation be-tween frailty and cognitive function.关键词
