Abstract

To investigate the adsorption characteristics of chromium(Cr)by aged polyethylene(PE)and polyvinyl chloride(PVC)microplastics in typical paddy soils of East China area,this study systematically analyzed the adsorption behavior of Cr by virgin and acid-aged microplastics in yellow and red soils.Characterization analysis using scanning elec-tron microscopy(SEM),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET)revealed that the aging process significantly increased surface roughness,specific surface area,and oxygen-containing functional group content of microplastics.Adsorption kinetics and isotherm results indicated that both virgin and aged microplastics adsorbed Cr primarily through multilayer chemisorption,with adsorption capacity increasing significantly with microplastic dose.The adsorption characterization of aged microplastics varied in different soil types.In yellow soil,aging process enhanced Cr adsorption by both PE and PVC.By contrast,aging process im-proved PVC adsorption capacity but reduced PE adsorption capacity for Cr in red soil.This study demonstrated that Cr adsorption by aged microplastics depended on soil types,microplastic types and dose,providing critical scientific insights into the interaction mechanisms between microplastics and Cr in agricultural soils.
