Retirement's Effects on Urban Household Consumption Structure:Heterogeneity and Mechanisms

Abstract
Using micro-data from the China Household Finance Survey(CHFS)for the years 2015-2019 and employing a Fuzzy Re-gression Discontinuity Design(FRDD),this study investigates the impact of retirement on the consumption structure of urban house-holds in China,including the heterogeneity and underlying mechanisms.The main findings show that retirement increases household per capita consumption expenditure,with a smaller effect on necessity-based consumption and a larger impact on enjoyment-based consumption.The effects on the eight major consumption categories involve both substitution and income effects.Specifically,house-hold spending on food and healthcare rises,while the share of expenditures on cultural entertainment and transportation declines.Mechanism analysis indicates that reducing household liquidity constraints and improving access to internet-based financial services contribute to higher spending on enjoyment-based consumption.Lastly,a multidimensional decomposition by the employment type of the household head and different income quantiles reveals that post-retirement,low-income households engaged in self-employment experience a significant decline in per capita and enjoyment-based expenditures,whereas high-income households across different em-ployment types exhibit increased spending across all consumption categories.关键词
