Green fabrication of Mg-Al hydrotalcite-based catalysts for ethyl methyl carbonate synthesis

Abstract
Ethyl methyl carbonate(EMC)is a green chemical compound with broad applications in industries,such as lithium-ion battery electrolytes.EMC is generally synthesized through the ester exchange reaction between ethanol and dimethyl carbonate,and the catalyst used in this reaction is derived from Mg-Al hydrotalcite,which is generally synthesized using nitrates as the raw material.However,owing to the inherent explosive risk associated with nitrates,this process presents substantial safety hazards.These safety concerns have,in turn,imposed significant limitations on its industrial application.This study focuses on the synthesis of Mg-Al hydrotalcite-based catalysts using cost-effective and safe chloride salts as raw material,under ambient pressure and low water content conditions.The temperature-programmed desorption experiment confirmed the presence of abundant moderate alkaline sites and weak acidic sites on the surface of the catalysts.Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the acid-base sites and the relatively high specific surface area,the Mg-Al hydrotalcite-based catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the synthesis of EMC.Remarkably,under a space velocity of 6 h-1,the Mg-Al oxide catalyst obtained by calcining hydrotalcite with Mg/Al ratio of 2 at 500℃achieved an EMC yield of up to 51.3%,surpassing the performance of most conventional catalysts.To assess the practical applicability of the catalyst,long-term stability tests were conducted in a fixed-bed reactor.The results showed that the catalyst retained its high activity even after 1200 h of continuous operation,with no significant evidence of deactivation,underscoring its robustness and suitability for industrial applications.This study provides an efficient and economical new method for the green synthesis of Mg-Al hydrotalcite-based catalysts,and is expected to provide an important reference for the industrial production of carbonate compounds.By addressing both economic and environmental challenges,this method also represents a significant step forward in the development of sustainable chemical technologies.关键词
