Abstract

The study aims to explore the effect of different dietary nano-selenium levels on the growth performance and blood parameters of Leizhou goats in summer.Eighteen Leizhou goats,aged eight months and weighing(18.60±0.69)kg,were randomly divided into three groups,each with six replicates and one goat per replicate.The control group was fed a basal diet,while the experimental groups 1 and 2 were supplemented with 0.2 mg/kg and 0.4 mg/kg nano-selenium in the basal diet,respectively.The pre-trial period is 14 days,and the formal trial period is 42 days.The results showed that during the trial,the goats experienced mild or more severe heat stress for the entire period,with 40 days of moderate heat stress.As the nano-selenium level increased,the final body weight(FBW),average daily gain(ADG)increased linearly(P<0.05),while the feed-to-gain ratio(F/G)decreased linearly(P<0.05).The total white blood cell count(WBC)and neutrophil count(NEU)in the blood decreased linearly(P<0.05)and the intermediate cell count(MID)decreased quadratically(P<0.05).Compared with the control group,in the experimental groups,serum glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px)activity was significantly increased(P<0.05),total superoxide dismutase(T-SOD)activity and total antioxidant capacity(T-AOC)increased linearly(P<0.05),and malondialdehyde(MDA)content decreased linearly(P<0.05).Insulin(INS)and insulin-like growth factor 1(IGF-1)levels increased linearly(P<0.05),growth hormone(GH)and heat shock protein 70(HSP-70)levels were significantly increased(P<0.05),and cortisol(COR)content decreased linearly(P<0.05).In test group 1,leptin(LEP)content was significantly reduced(P<0.05),while in test group 2,it was significantly increased(P<0.05).In conclusion,adding nano-selenium to the diet improves the growth performance of Leizhou goats in summer,enhances their antioxidant capacity,and alleviates heat stress,with the optimal effect observed at a nano-selenium level of 0.4 mg/kg.
