Abstract

In recent years,fiber reinforced polymer(FRP)composites have been applied to the strengthening of underwater bridge structures.However,due to the lack of reliable underwater lap-bonding techniques,FRP sheets are only used as a temporary template.In order to investigate the feasibility and mechanism of underwater columns strengthened with lap bonded FRP,100 lap bonded FRP sheets specimens were designed and subjected to tensile test,and the effects of lap epoxy adhesive type,lap length,lap environment on the failure modes and mechanical properties of lap bonded FRP sheets specimens were analyzed.The test results show that with the decrease of the lap length,the lap bonded FRP sheets is prone to peel failure.On the contrary,the specimen is prone to fracture of FRP.When the lap length reaches 100 mm,FRP tensile fracture occurs in all lap bonded FRP sheets,moreover the shear strength of underwater lap bonded specimens can reach more than 70%of that of the onshore lap bonded specimens,demonstrating the feasibility of underwater FRP lap bonding.Based on the optimized impregnating adhesive,six lap bonded FRP sheets reinforced concrete columns,six non-dispersible mortar cylinder specimens and three unreinforced concrete cylinder specimens were prepared and tested under axial compression.FRP fracture occurred outside the lap region for the reinforced specimens,and the ultimate strength of the underwater specimens reached 88.5%of that of the onshore specimens,further confirming the feasibility of underwater lap bonded FRP sheets reinforced columns.This study can provide technical guidance for the engineering application of FRP strengthening in underwater columns.
