Abstract

Accurate evaluation of formation rock drillability provides a reliable basis for the optimization of drilling technologies and tools.Due to the great difficulty and cost of downhole coring,however,only cores from key intervals can be collected in most cases,so it is difficult to meet the demands for full-hole rock drillability evaluation.With the advancement of drilling technologies towards ultra-deep formations,there is an increasing demand for continuous rock drillability evaluation.Taking sandstone as an example,this paper extracts mineral particle contours from thin-section images.Then,microstructural quantitative indicators are obtained,and the relationship between sandstone microstructure and drillability is investigated.Finally,a drillability prediction model based on mineral compositions and microstructures is established through regression analysis,enabling drillability prediction of sandstone based on its microstructural and mineral compositional characteristics.The following results are obtained.First,sandstone drillability increases with quartz content but decreases with plagioclase content,and shows no significant correlation with the compaction degree,surface roughness,size uniformity and interlocking index of mineral particles.Second,the larger the size of mineral particles inside the sandstone and the lower the roundness,the weaker the corresponding drillability.Third,the prediction accuracy of rock drillability based on quartz and plagioclase content exceeds 0.68,whereas that based on microstructures and mineral compositions is higher than 0.83.In conclusion,this method can predict sandstone drillability comprehensively based on mineral content and microstructural characteristics of drilling cuttings,exhibiting the advantages of high speed,high efficiency and low cost,which saves the drillability determination costs and has important application prospect and value in the field of petroleum engineering.
