Abstract

The salinity of wastewater is an important factor to affect the biodegradation activity.To further evaluate the practical application potential of Alcaligenes faecalis DN25,the cyanide degradation of this strain was studied under different salinity levels.As a result,the cyanide degradation required much longer time with the increase of salinity.For example,the degradation time of 100 mg/L cyanide increased from 30 minutes to 84 hours when the salinity rose from 0 to 8%.Interestingly,the addition of glutamate,as a compatible solute,could significantly accelerate the cyanide degradation by strain DN25.Notably,under a salinity level of 4%,the addition of 300 mg/L glutamate could lead to complete degradation of 100 mg/L cyanide within just 30 minutes,whereas the degradation efficiency of the same sample without glutamate dropped to 86.2%±0.9%.Our preliminary studies revealed that glutamate could rapidly enter the cells to maintain osmotic pressure balance,thus sustaining the degradation activity.Overall,Alcaligenes faecalis DN25 exhibited promising potential for practical applications in the field of wastewater treatment.
