Advances in Prediction of Postpartum Production Performance and Diseases in Dairy Cows through Prepartum Non-esterified Fatty Acid Levels

Abstract
The peripartum period represents a critical phase in dairy cows,characterized by heightened susceptibility to nutritional and postpartum diseases.During this period,dairy cows experience a significant surge in energy demands owing to fetal growth and mammary gland development,potentially compounded by reduced feed intake leading to negative energy balance.During negative energy balance,dairy cows mobilize fat reserves,releasing non-esterified fatty acids(NEFA),which are subsequently converted into energy or ketone bodies such as β-hydroxybutyrate(BHBA)in the liver.While the presence of NEFA is a common physiological occurrence in the early stages of lactation,excessively elevated NEFA concentrations can disrupt the physiological functions of dairy cows,compromising their immune defenses and thereby elevating the risk of postpartum diseases.Consequently,high prepartum NEFA levels have emerged as a potential indicator for predicting postpartum declines in production performance and increased disease susceptibility in dairy cows.This article primarily reviews the potential role of prepartum NEFA levels as effective indicators for forecasting reduced postpartum production performance and heightened disease risks,and it also establishes optimal thresholds.This aims to enhance our understanding of the long-term repercussions of negative energy balance on dairy cow health and provide a scientific basis for the nutritional management of peripartum dairy cows.关键词
