Assessment of the Impact of Pharmaceutical Pollution on Aquatic Ecosystems—Using Diatoms as Indicator Organisms

Abstract
Pharmaceutical pollution poses a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems,impacting the health and ecological functions of water eco-systems.As primary producers and sensitive bioindicators,diatoms serve as crucial research subjects for assessing these impacts.This paper reviews the current status,environmental fate,and impacts of pharmaceutical pollution in water environments,and analyzes the sensitivity of diatoms to pharmaceuticals and their potential roles in environmental risk assessment.Pharmaceuticals enter water environments through various pathways,including drug use,domestic sewage,medical wastewater,and wastewater from agriculture,animal husbandry,and fishery indus-tries.In water environments,the environmental fate of pharmaceuticals is jointly influenced by their physicochemical properties and environ-mental parameters,potentially leading to their long-term persistence in water bodies and adverse effects on aquatic organisms.As important primary producers,diatoms are highly sensitive to environmental changes,and their responses to pharmaceutical pollution can reflect the health status of water bodies.Studies have shown that different pharmaceuticals have significantly different impacts on diatoms.Some pharma-ceuticals may cause damage to diatom cell structures,inhibit photosynthesis,and have other adverse effects.It is recommended that in future water environmental monitoring and pollution control,more attention should be paid to the application of diatoms.A combination of multiple approaches should be adopted to comprehensively address the threats posed by pharmaceutical pollution to aquatic ecosystems,thereby achie-ving the sustainable development of water ecosystems.关键词
