Abstract

Wireless sensor networks(WSN)is suitable to be deployed in complex and harsh physical environments to provide target mo-nitoring or situational awareness service.However,sensor nodes are usually battery-powered,so it is crucial to efficiently utilize the node energy to extend the lifetime of WSN.In view of the actual situations that the data collected and transmitted by numerous sensor nodes are large and redundant in WSN,an energy efficient data transmission scheme named EETICC is proposed,which effectively integrates network clustering and compressive sensing(CS)in order to minimize the unnecessary data transmission energy consumption.Firstly,the random deployed sensor nodes are organized into a hierarchical cluster structure based on the revised K-Medoids clustering algorithm,making the distribution of sensor nodes within the clusters more reasonable and the energy consumption of sensor nodes more balanced.Then,the cluster heads adopt CS to compress the raw data collected by nodes within each cluster and transmit the compressed sparse data to the sink node via inter-cluster multi-hop forwarding.Finally,the sink node can accurately recover the received data with the proper data reconstruction algorithm.Compared with several other typical data transmission strategies,simulation results show that the EETICC performs better in a number of commonly used performance metrics.Node energy consumption is significantly reduced and the network survival time is extended.
