Abstract

A systematic analysis was conducted on the trend,abrupt changes,and periodicity of the long-term natural and observed runoff series of the main stem stations including Xijiang Gaoyao Station,Beijiang Shijiao Station,Dongjiang Boro Station in the Pearl River Basin using the 5 years moving average method,M-K trend test method,anomaly analysis method,and wavelet analysis method.The analysis also quantitatively assessed the impact of human activities on the runoff series.The results provide valuable insights for the operation and scheduling of major water conservancy projects and the defense against floods and droughts in the Pearl River Basin.The results indicate that except for the measured annual runoff at the Gaoyao station on the Xijiang River,which shows a non-significant decreasing trend,the other natural and measured annual runoffs show non-significant increasing trends.During the flood season,the runoff of the Beijiang River shows a non-significant upward trend,while the Pearl River Basin,Xijiang River,and Dongjiang River show non-significant downward trends.The primary period of natural runoff in the Pearl River Basin and its three sub-basins is around 18 years.The impact of human activities on the runoff in the Pearl River Basin,Xijiang River,and Beijiang River shows a significant increasing trend,while the impact on the Dongjiang River shows a non-significant increasing trend.
